Herndon Virginia (VA) Wiping Your Computers Hard Drive – Removing Data From Your PC’s Hard Drive, Herndon Virginia (VA)
So you’ve just gone out and gotten a new computer and you’ve had your data migrated from the old pc to the new, what’s next? Before you throw out the old computer one thing to consider is donating it to a charity, but if you do plan on throwing it out or before you donate it, the first step is to clean all of your old data off of the hard drive. As far as wiping out your hard drive, there are three different ways you can do this. You have to always keep in mind that the data is never really gone on when you delete it, and with hackers today you never know who is trying to get a hold of your personal information.
The first and simplest thing you can start with, when wiping your hard drive, is reformatting. There are different ways to reformat your hard drive and this is usually dependant on what OS (operating system) you have. Reformatting your hard drive prepares it to accept new files and overwrite the so-called deleted files; it doesn’t actually delete all of your old files and data. Anyone who has a mind and tools to do it could actually still retrieve the old data and files using data recovery software. If you have sensitive information such as bank or credit card information on your computer the next step you would want to take is to get a disk wipe utility and run it.
There are free disk wipe utilities that you can get online which, unlike reformatting, will remove data so that it cannot be recovered with data recovery software. There are also disk wipe utilities that you can purchase.
The last thing to do to ensure that your data is gone and cannot be retrieved by anyone is to remove the hard drive and physically destroy it. You can still donate the computer to a charity, just without the hard drive. This is the only fool proof way to ensure that your info is safe. If you plan on destroying a hard drive please be very careful.
