Washington DC Data Recovery – Windows Computer Data Recovery, Washington DC

Just this weekend I was working on something for school and I wasn’t paying attention to how often I was saving my work.  Unfortunately at some point I lost power and then my computer crashed.  When I rebooted I realized that I had lost the work that I had done thus far.  Thankfully for me, I have found an incredible software by Piriform called “Recuva“.  “Recuva” is a free software download that will help you recover files that have been deleted from your Windows computer (PC), recycle bin, memory card, and MP3 player.  This is something that can be extremely helpful if you, like I have in the past, deleted an important file by accident or suffered data loss when my computer has crashed.

Some of the features that “Recuva” offers are recovering lost files on your computer, such as photos, documents, music files and even emails.  One thing I love about this is that you can even recover files directly from your iPod’s drive, even if you can access the files directly.  You don’t have to worry about losing the music from your iTunes library or iPod any more.  Another nice feature is that if you have damaged or formatted your hard drive and you forgot to back it up, “Recuva” can help you get those files back.  Where Windows can’t find files on a formatted or damaged drive, “Recuva” can!  They may not all be recoverable but it’s better than nothing.

Where “Recuva” helped me specifically is with it’s ability to restore unsaved Word documents.  This software can rebuild documents from their temporary files and believe me, if you have ever experienced this, it’s worth it!

One thing that you have to think about with the ability to recover data and files is that if you can do it, so can a hacker.  One other feature that “Recuva” offers is the ability to safely and securely delete files that you want to get rid of forever.  The software has the ability to overwrite the portion of the hard drive where the ghost file of the original file exists so that it can never be recovered.

Piriform offers great products and free downloads for cleaning up our computers and for more information or to download their products please visit their website.

Here at Geek ABC we love the Piriform products, especially Ccleaner.  Geek ABC is a locally owned and operated computer and network service and repair company in the local Washington DC Metro Area.  If you have any questions please feel free to visit our website at www.geekabc.com, or give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) to schedule an appointment.  We provide same day, mobile, in-home network support and repair services for residential and business customers. Arlington County Virginia (VA) Data Back Up – The Importance Of Backing Up Your Data, Arlington County Virginia (VA)

Have you ever considered the financial ramifications of a computer crash?  It wasn’t until recently when a customer came in with her daughter’s computer, which had crashed, looking for us to recover her pictures and music, that I really thought about it.  Here at Geek ABC our geeks (computer professionals) have expertise in data recovery among many other things.  We are a local computer network and repair service company that provides same-day in-home computer network and repair services.  If you have questions we can be reached via our website www.geekabc.com or you can give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) for more information or to schedule an appointment.

We tend to keep massive amounts of data on our computers much of which is irreplaceable.  Those of us who have iTunes libraries usually have thousands of songs and if you computer crashes and you haven’t backed up your data, that’s thousands of dollars down the drain.  I know that when you purchase songs they are only $0.99 and at the time it doesn’t seem like that much money but when you look at the amount over a period of time it becomes hundreds if not thousands of dollars worth of music.  I know that when I think about it in those terms I would be devastated to lose that amount of money.

Another reason to consider backing up your data is for your photos and home videos.  With most of us using digital cameras these days it’s likely that you have a lifetime of memories stored on your computer.  I had a situation a few years back where I had gone to Europe and had taken numerous family pictures only to have my camera stolen.  I hadn’t even had a chance to download the pictures and it was devastating to lose those memories of the trip thus far.  Can you imagine losing all of the photos that are saved on your computer because of a simple crash?  Something you could have prevented if you had backed up your data.

In a previous post about Data Back Up I touched on all of the different types of data back up that there are and so it then comes down to deciding which one works best for you.  There are multiple options out there as far as data back up.  There are online data backup services, you can invest in an external hard drive, or you can back up your data on to CD’s, DVD’s, or Flash Drives.  Again, if you have any questions please feel free to give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) or visit our website www.geekabc.com for more information.  We are also here to help assist in data recovery if your computer does happen to crash.

Blue Screen of Death or BSoD – What is the Blue Screen of Death?

In simple terms, The Blue Screen of Death is your computers way of telling you that something has gone exceeding wrong and it can be extremely intimidating and is very apparent.  The technical terms the BSOD is a “stop error message” and this is because the error that has occurred is so significant enough that every process on your computer has to come to a stop.  Basically, when applications within your OS aren’t behaving correctly the BSoD occurs.  Most often the BSoD can be resolved by simply rebooting your computer (PC) system, but if that doesn’t work you should look for expert advice.

Most often the Blue Screen occurs with software issues such as a corrupt operating system.  In other cases it’s caused by memory issues or incompatible hardware and software.

Data Backup – Backing Up Your Data

One of the most important things we can do is back up the data that is on our computers.  I know that we don’t often think about it, but a system crash due to a virus or hardware failure can be disastrous.  And even though it seems redundant and time-consuming, performing regular data backups can save you a lot of headaches.  Consider what it might cost you in time, effort, and money if your system does crash and you have to reconstruct all of your data or risk losing it forever.

The most popular options for data backup are:

1.       CD and DVD (Optical Drives)

2.       External Hard Drives

3.       Flash Drives

4.       Online Backup Services

5.       RAID System – Mainly applies to business environments or a person with very large amounts of data

ConsumerReports.org has a great table that lists the Pros and Cons of each option for data backup.

Optical drives (CD’s and DVD’s) are great for backing up files such as your music and photos.  With the boom of multimedia downloading sites such as iTunes, Rhapsody and Napster, most, if not all, of our music is on our computers and if you think about it, to lose them could possible mean losing thousands of dollars, and as far as photos go, because we are more inclined to use a digital camera these days, all of our photos are digital and we rarely ever print them out because it’s much easier to share them via email or social networking site, those memories are priceless, especially if you lose them. CD’s and DVD’s are prone to scratches and other physical damage that can cause problems so you have to make sure that you are careful with them and store them safely.

Flash Drives are better suited for backing up files such as word documents and excel spreadsheets.  Using the computers USB Drive you can easily back up your data and transport it.  Flash drives are nice because they are small but they offer a limited amount of storage space and because of their size they can be easily lost.

External hard drives are probably the best when it comes to backing up home computers.  They offer a lot of storage space and you can set them up to run automatic backups on a regular basis.  This eliminates having to back up data manually as with optical drives or flash drives.

Online backup services are an alternative that a lot of people are choosing these days because you can access your data remotely, as long as you have an internet connection and safe from physical damage.  Up to a certain amount of data is free for online back up services, after that they usually charge a small monthly or annual fee.

RAID system configurations are good for business environments or for individuals with large amounts of data.  In the even of a system failure RAID essentially gives a mirror image of the hard drive.  They automatically image the drive (back up).

In the even of a computer crash or system failure, having your data backed up is essential.  If you haven’t backed up your data, we strongly recommend that you do.  Geek ABC offers  data recovery services, RAID troubleshooting and installation, can assist in data backups,  and in-home computer repair for home and business customers in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. We serve customers and clients in Virginia (VA), Maryland (MD) and Washington, DC in areas such as Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, McLean, Great Falls, Oakton, Springfield, Vienna, Bethesda, Silver Spring, Germantown, Rockville, Olney, Potomac, Chevy Chase and Washington DC.

Computer Crash Recovery – A computer crash is something we all fear these days but it also seems to be something that is inevitable, random and can be quite frustrating. Computers seem to be extremely volatile these days and even still we tend to trust them with some of our most precious information.

The Top Four reasons for a computer crash are “Bad Drivers”, “Bad Power Supply”, “Corrupt Files” and “Overheating”. Other things that can cause a crash or a freeze can be the installation or update of new software, hardware or a game.

A crash can range from something as small as an application quitting on its own to the dreaded Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).  The BSOD isn’t so simple to figure out and most often there’s no way to resolve it without technicians who have the right tools to diagnose the exact nature of the issue, and that’s what we here at Geek ABC are here to do. The Geek ABC onsite computer repair techs are experienced computer professionals who will come to you and work around your schedule to help meet your individual needs.
