Washington DC Adware – Potential Adware Infections On Your Computer, Washington DC

Adware (Advertising-supported software) can be any sort of software package that will automatically display, play or download advertisements on your computer.  They are usually in the form of a pop-up and their object is to generate revenue for its author.  By itself, adware, is basically harmless, but some are integrated with spyware such as privacy-invasive software or keyloggers.  Spyware is a type of malware or malicious software which steals information from your computer, but that is an entirely separate blog subject.

Just about all commercial antivirus software can currently detect adware and spyware or they offer a separate malware, spyware detection package.  There have been many programs developed to detect, quarantine, and remove adware, spyware, and malware.  Some of which are Ad-Aware, Spybot – Search & Destroy, Spyware Doctor, and Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware.  If you believe your computer has been infected with any of these softwares, it’s important that you make sure that your antivirus software and its definitions are up-to-date and get rid of them.

A few examples of Adware that I have personally seen are:

Gator, Bonzi Buddy, ClipGenie, 180SearchAssistant, Comet Cursor, DollarRevenue, and VirusProtectPro.

Geek ABC has expertise in removing viruses, spyware, adware, and malware and if you don’t feel like you have gotten completely rid of them on your own, we can be reached via our website www.geekabc.com or you can give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) for more information or to schedule an appointment.  Geek ABC is a local computer and network support and repair company and we offer same day, in-home support and service.

Arlington County Virginia (VA) Data Back Up – The Importance Of Backing Up Your Data, Arlington County Virginia (VA)

Have you ever considered the financial ramifications of a computer crash?  It wasn’t until recently when a customer came in with her daughter’s computer, which had crashed, looking for us to recover her pictures and music, that I really thought about it.  Here at Geek ABC our geeks (computer professionals) have expertise in data recovery among many other things.  We are a local computer network and repair service company that provides same-day in-home computer network and repair services.  If you have questions we can be reached via our website www.geekabc.com or you can give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) for more information or to schedule an appointment.

We tend to keep massive amounts of data on our computers much of which is irreplaceable.  Those of us who have iTunes libraries usually have thousands of songs and if you computer crashes and you haven’t backed up your data, that’s thousands of dollars down the drain.  I know that when you purchase songs they are only $0.99 and at the time it doesn’t seem like that much money but when you look at the amount over a period of time it becomes hundreds if not thousands of dollars worth of music.  I know that when I think about it in those terms I would be devastated to lose that amount of money.

Another reason to consider backing up your data is for your photos and home videos.  With most of us using digital cameras these days it’s likely that you have a lifetime of memories stored on your computer.  I had a situation a few years back where I had gone to Europe and had taken numerous family pictures only to have my camera stolen.  I hadn’t even had a chance to download the pictures and it was devastating to lose those memories of the trip thus far.  Can you imagine losing all of the photos that are saved on your computer because of a simple crash?  Something you could have prevented if you had backed up your data.

In a previous post about Data Back Up I touched on all of the different types of data back up that there are and so it then comes down to deciding which one works best for you.  There are multiple options out there as far as data back up.  There are online data backup services, you can invest in an external hard drive, or you can back up your data on to CD’s, DVD’s, or Flash Drives.  Again, if you have any questions please feel free to give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) or visit our website www.geekabc.com for more information.  We are also here to help assist in data recovery if your computer does happen to crash.

Loudon County Virginia (VA) Computer Water Damage – Computer Damage Caused By Water & Other Liquid Spills

One of the biggest causes for laptop damage or computer keyboard damage is due to accidentally spilling water or other liquids on to the computer or laptop itself or on the keyboard of your desktop computer.  If you spill any type of liquid on to your laptop you risk doing damage not only to the keyboard but to the system as a whole.  The extent of the damage sometimes depends on the amount of liquid and the type of liquid that is spilled on the computer.  Diagnosing these types of issues can also be somewhat difficult.  With a regular desktop keyboard, since they aren’t extremely expensive, it’s probably better to just go ahead and replace it.  With a laptop, things get a little more difficult.  Fluid damage on a laptop keyboard could not only damage the keyboard but several other parts as well, including the motherboard.  The first thing you should do if you spill something on your laptop is to turn it off, clean up as much of the access liquid as soon as possible, turn it on its side or upside down, try to dry it out, and have it looked at by a computer professional as soon as possible to have it cleaned up.  Damage caused by liquid spilled on a keyboard is a common issue that we see and deal with here at Geek ABC.

Geek ABC is a local computer and network service and repair company.  Our computer geeks have expertise in, but not limited to, desktop and laptop computer repair, emergency data recovery, data transfer and backup, virus and spyware removal, network installation and repair (both wired and wireless), software and hardware install and upgrades, as well as remote tech support and one-on-one training.  If you are having computer troubles and need help we can be reached via our website www.geekabc.com, or give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) to set up an appointment.  Geek ABC provides mobile, on-site computer and network repair services for residential and business customers throughout the Washington DC Metro area.

Even something that appears as harmless as water can cause fatal issues within a computer.  It’s not the water itself that does the damage but what is in the water.  Tap and bottled water both contain minerals which allows it to conduct electricity and gives it the ability to cause corrosion.  Therefore, spilling water on your laptop can easily result in a short circuit and can eventually lead to its death.  Other liquids that are commonly spilled on computers are coffee, soda, wine, and beer.  Each of these liquids has specific ingredients that can cause specific problems.  If you spill something on your laptop or keyboard it is important that you let the person who is going to be working on it know exactly what it was and how much was spilled.

Here at Geek ABC we work hard to provide you with useful and accurate information.  Please feel free to give us a call 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) or visit us on our website @ www.geekabc.com.

Fairfax Virginia (VA) Pirated Software – The Risks Of Pirated Software, Fairfax Virginia (VA)

Recently we had a customer call in who had used popular website for services to find someone to come in and update her computers’ OS’s (Operating System’s) to Windows 7.  Unfortunately, for her, this turned out to be more of a nightmare than a cheap and easy way to get things done.  The version that the person installed was pirated, and not only did she lost important data but it is costing her more in the long run than had she gone out and bought the software herself and had it installed by a professional.

Geek ABC is a locally owned computer service and repair company. Geek ABC services the entire Washington DC Metro are and we can be reached via our website www.geekabc.com, or give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) to set up an appointment.

Pirated software is nothing new, but for those who don’t realize what they are getting in to; using and having pirated software can cause major problems, for you and your computer.  It puts your computer and your data at great risk.  The pirated version of Windows 7 that came out before its release date had a Trojan virus, malware, and botnets attached to it, and these did serious damage to a lot of people’s computers, before they realized it.  Most antivirus software’s weren’t ready with the Window’s 7 updates; therefore there was not way for them to detect these viruses.

Some other risks that come with pirated software:

  • Often the software lacks important elements that prevent you from performing upgrades
  • No warranty protection or support
  • Putting you, your company, or the company you work for at risk for copyright infringement
  • Could be infected with viruses or other malware that could damage your hard drive or cripple your network
  • And worst of all it could lead to criminal prosecution

In the long run, making sure that your software and operating systems are legal will cost you less, even though it seems like a lot at first.

Washington DC Desktop Vs. Laptop – Choosing Your Next Computer, Desktop Vs. Laptop, Washington DC

If you’re in the market for a new computer, you might find yourself wondering if you should invest in a new desktop or laptop.  Both types of computers have their Pro’s and Con’s and Geek ABC is here to assist in helping you make that decision.  We can be reached via our website, www.geekabc.com, or give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) to schedule an appointment.  We provide same day, mobile, onsite computer support and repair services for residential and business customers in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area.

First let’s take a look at the Pro’s and Con’s of a owning a desktop computer (PC):

Pros:

  • Faster overall processing speed
  • More Memory and Drives
  • Easier to Customize and Upgrade by yourself
  • Function better for multimedia purposes, such as gaming, functioning as a TV, DVR, DVD/CD player, and photo display
  • If you work with graphics, gaming, or photo editing, you can easily upgrade and choose your viewing space with a larger monitor
  • They cost less than laptops

Cons:

  • They aren’t easily portable
  • You need to have space to set them up, especially if you aren’t investing in an all-in-one, like the Apple Mac. (Basic set up will require space for a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and computer tower)
  • You will need multiple outlets and cables for your peripherals
  • In general they are heavy and a hassle to move when you need to.

As far as Laptop’s go, the Pro’s and Con’s are as followed:

Pros:

  • Portability!  Even with the larger laptops, you can close them up, put them in a bag, and take them anywhere.
  • They are self contained.  This helps to keep your workspace neat and clean because, essentially, all you need is a power cord and possibly an Ethernet cable for internet connectivity.
  • If you do want to you it as your main computer you can invest in a docking station and attach a mouse, keyboard, and monitor
  • And Last but not Least, because they are battery powered, as long as the battery has charge, you don’t have to worry about losing a document during a power failure.

Cons:

  • They can be difficult to customize and upgrade
  • If you need repair you will most likely have to go directly to the manufacturer to fix it, if it’s still in warranty, and if the warranty is expired it could be costly to repair
  • They are easily stolen and you may have to invest extra in a laptop lock
  • They are easily damaged if dropped, especially the screen, and if you spill something on the keyboard it could ruin the entire computer.
  • They are more expensive

So overall, whether you decide to invest in a desktop or laptop, it’s all about what fits your lifestyle better.  For students, it’s nice to have a laptop that is easily portable and can be taken to class and libraries to study, but they can be easily stolen as well.  Desktops are better suited for families who have the space or for someone who needs to multimedia capabilities for work or fun.  Again, either way you decide to choose, Geek ABC is here to help!

Washington DC Netbooks vs. Laptops – The Differences Between Netbooks And Laptops, Washington DC

With the increasing need for speed and mobility, there has been some debate over whether one should invest in a netbook or a laptop.  Here at Geek ABC we strive to provide you with the best information we can to help make your computer and device decisions easier.  You can reach us via our website, www.geekabc.com, or give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) to schedule an appointment.  We provide same day, mobile, in-home network support and repair services for residential and business customers in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area.

Netbooks are designed primarily for surfing the internet and sending and receiving email.  They are smaller, usually with a 7” to 10” screen, and lack optical drives which allow them to have longer battery life and are much lighter than the average laptop.  Most netbooks, these days, have Solid State Drives (SSDs) instead of Hard Disk Drives, which have smaller capacity but no moving parts which should and help to increase battery life and speed.  Netbooks have slower processors than laptops which can decrease productivity, but you have to always keep in mind that they aren’t meant to perform the complex tasks that you can with a laptop.  Netbooks are made for portability, they are smaller, lighter, have a longer battery life, and come equipped with internal wireless cards that allow you to get on the internet anywhere there’s a Wi-Fi connection, but because they are made for specific functions, you lose in speed and productivity.  Also due to the lack of optical drives and faster processors, netbooks tend to be quite a bit cheaper than laptops but they are much more portable.  Netbooks, for the most part, get about 6 hours of use before needing to charge them.

Laptops on the other hand do have optical drives and have a dual or quad-core processor which makes them fast but they hare much heavier and more expensive.  This also takes away from their battery life so you can only get a couple hours of use before having to charge them.  Laptops are made to work and perform just as your desktop computer at home, just a portable version.  They provide many more capabilities than netbooks when it comes to doing more than surfing the internet or email but they are quite a bit bigger, starting at 14″ and are much heavier.

Basically it comes down to what you need it for.  With a netbook you will sacrifice speed and productivity for portability but that might work if you only need it for basic things.

Geek ABC’s computer technicians provide FAST, mobile, in-home computer support and repair services.  Geek ABC technicians are experienced in working with both PC’s and Mac’s.  We have expertise in upgrading and replacing memory, operating systems, hard drives, motherboards, power supplies, software, and processors as well as many other computer peripherals. Alexandria Virginia (VA) Computer Power Supply – PC Power Supply, Alexandria Virginia (VA)

The Power Supply Unit, often times abbreviated as PSU, in your computer is a hardware component that is used to supply the power to the physical workings in a computer.  The power supply converts AC (alternating current) from the wall jack in your home, to the DC (direct current) that your computer needs to run properly.  In a desktop computer the power supply is a metal box that is visible from the back of the computer; it will contain the power-cord receptacle as well as a cooling fan.  The Power Supply Unit in a laptop is not a noticeable and as easy to change.

Geek ABC’s computer geeks are experienced in diagnosing Power Supply failures and can be reached via out website www.geekabc.com, or give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) to schedule an appointment.  We provide same day, mobile, in-home network support and repair services for residential and business customers in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area.

When you have power supply issues you might notice that your monitor and other peripherals continue to get power but your computer just won’t boot.  Some of the other symptoms you might experience when your power supply is failing are:

  • Your system won’t turn on but the peripherals do
  • Memory Issues
  • The system startup fails or locks up
  • Your computer reboots on its own or locks up during normal operation
  • The fan failing to spin
  • HDD (Hardware Drive Data) file system corruption
  • Issues running USB powered devices
  • Overheating due to the fan not running properly
  • And increased time that it takes for your computer to startup and shutdown

Possible power supply failure is a good reason to make sure that you have a current back-up of your data.  If you start noticing symptoms of your power supply failing you should check out your manufacturers’ website to see what information they offer on replacing it.  You should always have your computer’s specs on hand just in case something like this happens.  If you aren’t sure that the power supply is the problem or you don’t feel comfortable enough to change it yourself, GEEK ABC is here to come to the rescue.

Arlington Virginia (VA) Bluetooth Technology – Using Bluetooth Technology, Arlington Virginia (VA)

It’s about time we are able to say “so long” to all of our wired devices.  With Bluetooth technology we can use many of our smaller electronics without needing a wired connection.  With the sole intention of replacing the cables for fixed and or portable electronics, Bluetooth has the market.  Using short wavelength radio transmissions, Bluetooth is a wireless technology for sending and receiving data.  Bluetooth technology makes transferring data between devices simple and secure.  Because Bluetooth technology only sends and receives info within your PAN or Personal Area Network, your data is secure.  Bluetooth range is approximately 10 meters or 33 feet.

Many of our electronic devices today have Bluetooth technology built in making it easier to do things such as print from our computers or laptops with out having a wired connection, talk on our mobile phones using a wireless headset, and connecting our phones to our cars or GPS navigation systems for hands free talking.  There are even wireless mouse’s and keyboards that use Bluetooth technology so that you don’t have as many wires for your PC or you can connect them with your laptop when you are on the go.  Bluetooth technology has actually made wireless communications easy and fun.  Some of the companies that use Bluetooth technology in their devices are Ericsson, Intel, Lenovo, Microsoft, Cannon, Motorola, Nokia, Toshiba, Samsung, Apple, and TiVo.

Data Backup – Backing Up Your Data

One of the most important things we can do is back up the data that is on our computers.  I know that we don’t often think about it, but a system crash due to a virus or hardware failure can be disastrous.  And even though it seems redundant and time-consuming, performing regular data backups can save you a lot of headaches.  Consider what it might cost you in time, effort, and money if your system does crash and you have to reconstruct all of your data or risk losing it forever.

The most popular options for data backup are:

1.       CD and DVD (Optical Drives)

2.       External Hard Drives

3.       Flash Drives

4.       Online Backup Services

5.       RAID System – Mainly applies to business environments or a person with very large amounts of data

ConsumerReports.org has a great table that lists the Pros and Cons of each option for data backup.

Optical drives (CD’s and DVD’s) are great for backing up files such as your music and photos.  With the boom of multimedia downloading sites such as iTunes, Rhapsody and Napster, most, if not all, of our music is on our computers and if you think about it, to lose them could possible mean losing thousands of dollars, and as far as photos go, because we are more inclined to use a digital camera these days, all of our photos are digital and we rarely ever print them out because it’s much easier to share them via email or social networking site, those memories are priceless, especially if you lose them. CD’s and DVD’s are prone to scratches and other physical damage that can cause problems so you have to make sure that you are careful with them and store them safely.

Flash Drives are better suited for backing up files such as word documents and excel spreadsheets.  Using the computers USB Drive you can easily back up your data and transport it.  Flash drives are nice because they are small but they offer a limited amount of storage space and because of their size they can be easily lost.

External hard drives are probably the best when it comes to backing up home computers.  They offer a lot of storage space and you can set them up to run automatic backups on a regular basis.  This eliminates having to back up data manually as with optical drives or flash drives.

Online backup services are an alternative that a lot of people are choosing these days because you can access your data remotely, as long as you have an internet connection and safe from physical damage.  Up to a certain amount of data is free for online back up services, after that they usually charge a small monthly or annual fee.

RAID system configurations are good for business environments or for individuals with large amounts of data.  In the even of a system failure RAID essentially gives a mirror image of the hard drive.  They automatically image the drive (back up).

In the even of a computer crash or system failure, having your data backed up is essential.  If you haven’t backed up your data, we strongly recommend that you do.  Geek ABC offers  data recovery services, RAID troubleshooting and installation, can assist in data backups,  and in-home computer repair for home and business customers in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. We serve customers and clients in Virginia (VA), Maryland (MD) and Washington, DC in areas such as Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, McLean, Great Falls, Oakton, Springfield, Vienna, Bethesda, Silver Spring, Germantown, Rockville, Olney, Potomac, Chevy Chase and Washington DC.

Is your computer running slow? -

Do you often find yourself asking “why is my computer so slow?”  Well, you’re not alone.

Here are a few things you can do yourself, in order to keep your computer running like new:

The first thing you should look at is getting rid of or deleting any files that you no longer need and back up files that you don’t use often on to DVD or CD, delete them from your hard drive, and store them in a safe place.  This will give you extra space on your hard drive and improve the performance of the OS.

Next you can remove all of the useless start up programs.  Computers these days come preloaded with a number of programs that you will never use.  Go through them and uninstall anything that you don’t need.  This will increase the speed of your computer.

Third, defragment your hard drive.  Performing a disk defragmentation on your hard drive, every so often based on usage, will organize your files and boost your computer’s speed by approximately 20%.

The next thing that you can do is make sure that your antivirus software is up-to-date and running.  Poor performance can sometimes be attributed to viruses and malware so you want to make sure that you are performing regular virus scans and updates to ensure that you eliminate them.

And last but not least, one thing that users tend to forget about is cleaning up their registry.  This is probably one of the most effective methods in restoring computer speed.  Every time you install, uninstall or run a program, registry entries are created.  Over time your system will be filled with errors and this will slow down its performance significantly.  If you are unsure about making manual changes to your registry using the Windows Registry Editor, there are a number of Free Registry Cleaners available.

If you don’t feel like any of these steps have aided in improving your computer speed.  Geek ABC offers in-home computer repair for Home and Business computer customers in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area.
