Arlington County Virginia (VA) Data Back Up – The Importance Of Backing Up Your Data, Arlington County Virginia (VA)

Have you ever considered the financial ramifications of a computer crash?  It wasn’t until recently when a customer came in with her daughter’s computer, which had crashed, looking for us to recover her pictures and music, that I really thought about it.  Here at Geek ABC our geeks (computer professionals) have expertise in data recovery among many other things.  We are a local computer network and repair service company that provides same-day in-home computer network and repair services.  If you have questions we can be reached via our website www.geekabc.com or you can give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) for more information or to schedule an appointment.

We tend to keep massive amounts of data on our computers much of which is irreplaceable.  Those of us who have iTunes libraries usually have thousands of songs and if you computer crashes and you haven’t backed up your data, that’s thousands of dollars down the drain.  I know that when you purchase songs they are only $0.99 and at the time it doesn’t seem like that much money but when you look at the amount over a period of time it becomes hundreds if not thousands of dollars worth of music.  I know that when I think about it in those terms I would be devastated to lose that amount of money.

Another reason to consider backing up your data is for your photos and home videos.  With most of us using digital cameras these days it’s likely that you have a lifetime of memories stored on your computer.  I had a situation a few years back where I had gone to Europe and had taken numerous family pictures only to have my camera stolen.  I hadn’t even had a chance to download the pictures and it was devastating to lose those memories of the trip thus far.  Can you imagine losing all of the photos that are saved on your computer because of a simple crash?  Something you could have prevented if you had backed up your data.

In a previous post about Data Back Up I touched on all of the different types of data back up that there are and so it then comes down to deciding which one works best for you.  There are multiple options out there as far as data back up.  There are online data backup services, you can invest in an external hard drive, or you can back up your data on to CD’s, DVD’s, or Flash Drives.  Again, if you have any questions please feel free to give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) or visit our website www.geekabc.com for more information.  We are also here to help assist in data recovery if your computer does happen to crash.

Northern Virginia (VA) Battery Backup – Protecting Your Computer With A Battery Backup, Northern Virginia

Also known as an Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS), a battery backup is one of the best ways to protect and preserve your computer as well as your data.  This is especially important when we maintain highly sensitive and important data on our computers or if we have an expensive computer system.

Geek ABC is a locally owned computer and network support and repair company.  We work hard to provide you with quality information to help you make the right computer (PC) decisions.  We can be reached via our website www.geekabc.com, or give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) to schedule an appointment. We provide same-day, mobile, onsite computer and network support and repair for residential and business customers throughout the Washington DC Metropolitan area.

Most people think that having a surge protector is enough to keep their computer safe, no to mention they are inexpensive.  This is really only the case when you are talking about voltage spikes.  Surge protectors don’t help to maintain the constant voltage level, “condition” the power, which is coming in to your computer.  Therefore, in the instance of a brown-out (low power conditions) or power failure, they are useless.  Brown-outs can be extremely harmful because they cause your computer to run on an extremely low voltage which puts a incredible amount of strain on your computers hardware.

One of the main purposes of a battery backup is to, again, “condition” the power and to maintain a constant voltage level for the electricity that is coming in to your computer.  Any sort of power change is very harmful to your computer and can eventually cause it to start failing.  Battery backups also have a quicker response time than surge protectors.  This will help with sudden and quick spikes in electrical current, which is constantly fluctuating.

The other reason to invest in a battery back up is that it protects your data.  I’m sure that I’m not the only one who has been in the middle of working on something when the power suddenly goes out and you’re afraid that you’ve just lost everything that you were working on that you hadn’t recently saved.  We all know how important the data is on our computers and taking certain precautions can help prevent us from losing it.

APC is the one of the most common, well-kn0wn brands for battery backups and when you start your research in to buying a batter backup (UPS) it’s probably smart to stick with brands that you know, just as with any other computer product.  There are some brands that are cheaper and that we aren’t as familiar with that can be just as good as the popular more expensive brands, but before you invest in them, do the research!  Most people should be able to survive just fine with a lesser expensive product that will keep your computers power running, in the event of a blackout or brownout, for about 5 to 15 minutes, which is plenty of time to save what you are working on and shut down the computer without issues.

In the long run, this will save you a lot of hassle when it comes to data loss and recovery as well as protecting your computers hardware from damage.
