Prince William County Virginia (VA) Antistatic Mats – Antistatic Mats Or Ground Mats, Prince William County Virginia (VA)

As I stated in my previous blog about Antistatic Wrist Straps, any time you are working on the inside of your computer you should use some sort of antistatic device so that you don’t risk damaging your computer with ESD or electrostatic discharge.  Some people think it’s enough to just ground yourself before working on the computer by touching the metal of the box, and if you are a professional and you are completely sure that you are static free, this might be fine.  But if you’re an amateur and you don’t do this very often you may not ground yourself properly, therefore potentially causing serious damage.

I recently talked about the use of antistatic wrist straps when working on a computer but there are some people out there who find them to be uncomfortable and annoying because they are attached to you and then grounded to the computer with some sort of clip.  The easiest and next best option is an antistatic mat.  Antistatic mats have a conductive material embedded within the mat which helps to disperse the static electricity in the device that could potentially damage your computer, as well as removing the static electricity that is built up in your body.

For an antistatic mat to work it has to be grounded.  This is usually accomplished by plugging it directly in to a grounded electrical socket.  There are also some mats that allow you to connect an antistatic wrist straps, as well, for that extra layer of protection.  You can never be too careful when it comes to protecting your computer, especially when you are working on the insides of the machine.  Antistatic mats generally run between $10.00 and $15.00 and if you as me that’s extremely cheap when you think about the cost of the computer and it’s parts, not to mention the extra time it would take you to diagnose and fix the problem that might be caused by static electricity.
