Data Backup – Backing Up Your Data

One of the most important things we can do is back up the data that is on our computers.  I know that we don’t often think about it, but a system crash due to a virus or hardware failure can be disastrous.  And even though it seems redundant and time-consuming, performing regular data backups can save you a lot of headaches.  Consider what it might cost you in time, effort, and money if your system does crash and you have to reconstruct all of your data or risk losing it forever.

The most popular options for data backup are:

1.       CD and DVD (Optical Drives)

2.       External Hard Drives

3.       Flash Drives

4.       Online Backup Services

5.       RAID System – Mainly applies to business environments or a person with very large amounts of data

ConsumerReports.org has a great table that lists the Pros and Cons of each option for data backup.

Optical drives (CD’s and DVD’s) are great for backing up files such as your music and photos.  With the boom of multimedia downloading sites such as iTunes, Rhapsody and Napster, most, if not all, of our music is on our computers and if you think about it, to lose them could possible mean losing thousands of dollars, and as far as photos go, because we are more inclined to use a digital camera these days, all of our photos are digital and we rarely ever print them out because it’s much easier to share them via email or social networking site, those memories are priceless, especially if you lose them. CD’s and DVD’s are prone to scratches and other physical damage that can cause problems so you have to make sure that you are careful with them and store them safely.

Flash Drives are better suited for backing up files such as word documents and excel spreadsheets.  Using the computers USB Drive you can easily back up your data and transport it.  Flash drives are nice because they are small but they offer a limited amount of storage space and because of their size they can be easily lost.

External hard drives are probably the best when it comes to backing up home computers.  They offer a lot of storage space and you can set them up to run automatic backups on a regular basis.  This eliminates having to back up data manually as with optical drives or flash drives.

Online backup services are an alternative that a lot of people are choosing these days because you can access your data remotely, as long as you have an internet connection and safe from physical damage.  Up to a certain amount of data is free for online back up services, after that they usually charge a small monthly or annual fee.

RAID system configurations are good for business environments or for individuals with large amounts of data.  In the even of a system failure RAID essentially gives a mirror image of the hard drive.  They automatically image the drive (back up).

In the even of a computer crash or system failure, having your data backed up is essential.  If you haven’t backed up your data, we strongly recommend that you do.  Geek ABC offers  data recovery services, RAID troubleshooting and installation, can assist in data backups,  and in-home computer repair for home and business customers in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. We serve customers and clients in Virginia (VA), Maryland (MD) and Washington, DC in areas such as Arlington, Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax, McLean, Great Falls, Oakton, Springfield, Vienna, Bethesda, Silver Spring, Germantown, Rockville, Olney, Potomac, Chevy Chase and Washington DC.

Is your computer running slow? -

Do you often find yourself asking “why is my computer so slow?”  Well, you’re not alone.

Here are a few things you can do yourself, in order to keep your computer running like new:

The first thing you should look at is getting rid of or deleting any files that you no longer need and back up files that you don’t use often on to DVD or CD, delete them from your hard drive, and store them in a safe place.  This will give you extra space on your hard drive and improve the performance of the OS.

Next you can remove all of the useless start up programs.  Computers these days come preloaded with a number of programs that you will never use.  Go through them and uninstall anything that you don’t need.  This will increase the speed of your computer.

Third, defragment your hard drive.  Performing a disk defragmentation on your hard drive, every so often based on usage, will organize your files and boost your computer’s speed by approximately 20%.

The next thing that you can do is make sure that your antivirus software is up-to-date and running.  Poor performance can sometimes be attributed to viruses and malware so you want to make sure that you are performing regular virus scans and updates to ensure that you eliminate them.

And last but not least, one thing that users tend to forget about is cleaning up their registry.  This is probably one of the most effective methods in restoring computer speed.  Every time you install, uninstall or run a program, registry entries are created.  Over time your system will be filled with errors and this will slow down its performance significantly.  If you are unsure about making manual changes to your registry using the Windows Registry Editor, there are a number of Free Registry Cleaners available.

If you don’t feel like any of these steps have aided in improving your computer speed.  Geek ABC offers in-home computer repair for Home and Business computer customers in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area.
