Vienna, Virginia (VA) Wireless Router Encryption –Wireless Router Encryption For Home Networks Vienna, Virginia (VA)

Most home networks these days are wireless and it is very important that we protect the data that we have on our computers and the information that we are sending over the internet.  One of the worst feelings in the world is finding out that our system has been hacked and we now have a virus on our computer or even worse our identity stolen.  Encryption also keeps random people from jumping on to our wireless networks for free internet usage.  If you have a network and only use the default security, where WEP or WPA is turned off, any random person can jump on to your network and use your internet connection.  The two most common forms of encryption for home networks are WEP and WPA/WPA2.

WEP or Wired Equivalent Privacy is the lowest level of encryption.  This is basically one step above the default security and it will enable you to lock your network so that people can’t access it without your permission and an encryption passkey.  WEP is very easy to configure and has three basic settings:

1.       Off – no security

2.       64-bit – weak security

3.       128-bit – better security

The downfall to WEP is that it can be easy to crack and it can slightly reduce your performance, but probably not enough to notice.

WPA or Wi-Fi Protected Access is a wireless security with more protection than WEP.  WPA is newer form of security than WEP that offers a higher level of security.  A few disadvantages to WPA are that all the computers, access points and adapters must have WPA software; it won’t be compatible with older operating systems such as Windows 95, and any equipment older than 2003 won’t be upgradable, because WPA wasn’t introduced until 2003.  WPA has two major advantages over WEP:

1.       Even if hackers intercept the data, it will be difficult for them to read because the TKIP (Temporal Key Integrity Protocol) mechanism shares a starting key between each devise but then each devise will change their encryption key for every packet.

2.       A Certificate Authentication can be used which will stop a hacker acting as a legitimate user, from accessing data.

Encrypting your data is extremely important and you need to make sure that your network is secure.  If you have questions or concerns about your specific Wi-Fi security and encryption or need help securing your Wi-Fi connection, Geek ABC is here to help, you can reach us via our website, www.geekabc.com, or give us a call at 1.877.GEEKABC (1.877.433.5222) to schedule an appointment.  Our computer geeks can help you set up a new wireless network if you don’t already have one and can help you set up the level of security that you require to keep your information safe.  We provide same day, mobile, in-home computer and network support and repair services for residential and business customers in the Washington, DC Metropolitan area.
